Anti-wrinkle treatments

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENTS

What are anti-wrinkle treatments?

There are a number of treatments which help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. These include the following treatments:

  • Muscle relaxing injections
  • Dermal fillers (for further information see Dermal fillers)
  • Microneedling
  • Chemical peels
  • Medical grade Skin Care (for further information see Medical grade Skin Care)

What are muscle relaxing injections?

Muscle relaxing injections involve injecting small quantities of the product into specific muscles of the face. There are various preparations available but Dr Shyna uses a product produced by Allergan, which is of high quality.

What do muscle relaxing injections do?

Fine lines and wrinkles on the face occur because of repeated movement of the muscles under the skin. Muscle relaxing injections work by relaxing muscles that are injected. When this happens, it causes reduced movement of the injected muscle. This then reduces creasing of the overlying skin and smooths the fine lines and wrinkles. Whilst muscle relaxing injections can help fine lines and wrinkles, they do not remove deep, fixed lines. However, in such cases, a combination of muscle relaxing injections and other treatments can be effective.

Which parts of the face does Dr Shyna use muscle relaxing injections for?

Dr Shyna uses muscle relaxing injections in the following 3 areas:

  • Forehead
  • Between the eyes (Glabella area) (frown lines)
  • Around the eyes (Crow's feet lines)

Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

Muscle relaxing injections are relatively safe when performed by appropriately trained practitioners. They are widely researched and have long-term safety data and are used widely in Medicine as well as for Cosmetic procedures.

What is the process for receiving treatment?

The first step is to book your no obligation consultation. This will take place at a time convenient to you with Dr Shyna herself. At the consultation, Dr Shyna will undertake a comprehensive 30 minute assessment to identify your needs and to determine if the treatment is suitable for you and safe for you to receive. Following this assessment, Dr Shyna will give her recommendations as to what treatments may benefit you, including other treatments available. Prior to any treatments being carried out, the procedures and their risks and costs will be clearly explained. At this point, Dr Shyna recommends that you take a "cooling off" period of 48 hours to make sure you are happy to proceed. However, if, for your own convenience, you would prefer to proceed directly, the treatments can be carried out after the consultation, subject to your consent and appointment availability. As part of the treatment process, before and after photographs will be taken following your consent. These photographs are strictly confidential, as are the rest of your records. After the treatment, you will given full post-procedure aftercare information.

Treatment with muscle relaxing injections is absolutely contraindicated in the following conditions - Body Dysmorphic syndrome, pregnancy or breast feeding, neuromuscular disorders (eg, myasthenia gravis, myopathies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, skin infection at the proposed treatment site, known allergy to product and age < 18 years.

For muscle relaxing injections, relative contraindications include a tendency to excessive scarring, certain medications, autoimmune disease, immunosuppression, cancer and bleeding disorders. Please be assured that Dr Shyna will fully assess the presence of any contraindications during her comprehensive assessment with you and will ensure your safety is maintained at times.

Are there any side effects of muscle relaxing injections?

As with any medical treatment, there are always potential side effects and complications. When muscle relaxing injections are administered by appropriately trained practitioners, the risks of side effects are minimal. There are some common side effects of muscle relaxing injections such as redness, bruising or swelling at or around the injection site. These are usually mild and will usually settle within 24-48 hours, but this can vary in individual cases and may take a few days. There are rare complications of muscle relaxing injections, but as part of her comprehensive assessment and consent process, Dr Shyna will ensure that you are fully informed about all potential side effects before administering the treatment. You will also be given full aftercare advice and contact details if you have any concerns after the treatment.
